This is a Shockey family favorite--a must-have for every big celebration! Our Mamaw called it Chocolate Sheath Cake and we never corrected her. This Chocolate Sheet Cake is the easiest recipe you'll try. She always kept buttermilk and pecans on hand, so it was her easy go-to dessert.
CAKE
IN A SAUCE PAN, BRING TO A BOIL:
1 stick margarine
1 cup water
1/4 cup Hersey's powdered cocoa
1/2 cup Crisco oil
POUR OVER;
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
BEAT IN:
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk, mix first with
1 teaspoon baking soda
COOK IN A GREASED AND FLOURED 13 x 9 x 2 PAN AND BAKE AT 400 DEGREES FOR 25 MINUTES. DO NOT OVERCOOK. COOL FOR 15 MINUTES, THEN POUR ON ICING.
ICING
IN A SAUCEPAN, HEAT TOGETHER;
1 stick margarine
1/4 cup Hersey's powdered cocoa
1/3 cup buttermilk
THEN ADD:
1 box powdered sugar (4 cups)
1 cup chopped pecans
